Gary Lewis

During college, Atlanta native Gary Lewis read a book entitled “Prō·ĕxĭst·ĕnce” by Udo Middlemann. It began with the quote, “Only in creative activity do we externalize the identity we have as men made in the image of God. This then is the true basis for work.” This thought has had a continuing impact on him throughout his various pursuits, all of which, for him, have been exercises in creativity. He became a general contractor/ owner of a boutique construction company focused on the historic pre-depression houses in Atlanta. Following that he received a degree in Landscape Architecture and Art History from the University of Florida and relocated in Orlando and began a career as a landscape architect. He has always been drawn to various artistic pursuits, most recently to abstract acrylic painting. His work draws both from the geometric structure of his building and hardscape design work, as well as the softness from the organic forms of his landscape designs. He uses all the principles he absorbed in both design school and professional practice in an attempt to evoke a response by juxtaposing shapes, colors, textures, et al, to create both moments of harmony and of tension, that which he views as a representation of the world around us.
